PRESS RELEASE
Attempted Kidnapping / Menacing
On Saturday, November 24, 2018, approximately 6:22 am, the Monument Police Department responded to 1070 W. Baptist Rd (King Soopers), in reference to a menacing. Upon arrival officers learned the following:
A man and woman were walking out of the King Soopers store and approached their car. While doing so they noticed a male suspect (later identified as Steven Weaver, DOB 9/18/67) standing in the parking lot. After loading groceries, the woman got in the car and the man went to put the cart away. At that point Weaver walked up to the vehicle and tried to open the car door, but the woman saw what he was attempting to do and locked the doors, preventing him from gaining entry.
When the male returned to the vehicle, Weaver, who was holding a knife, confronted him and demanded that he be given a ride. At that point a physical confrontation broke out and Weaver tried to stab the man with the knife several times. The man tried to enter the vehicle, but Weaver pulled him away. Weaver was then able to enter the vehicle but was pulled out by the vehicle owner. After another struggle Weaver fled on foot but was later found in the area by officers and arrested. No one was injured during the struggles. After apprehending Weaver, it was discovered that he is a sex offender but had not registered in the State of Colorado as required.
Weaver was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center and will be charged with attempted First Degree Kidnapping (F3), Attempted Aggravated Robbery (F4), Menacing (F5), First Degree Criminal Trespass (F5), Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, and Harassment.
The Monument Police Department would like to point out that the awareness displayed by the vehicle owners played a very large part in this incident concluding without injury or further criminal episode. They were both aware of their surroundings and paid attention to circumstances that did not seem right.
It is important to always pay attention to your surroundings. When moving about in public do not become so focused on your electronic devices that you fail to look around. Always take note of what is happening around you and who is in the area. If something does not feel right – trust your instincts.
